Missing Time - Works on Paper, 1974-1976, Reconsidered

The institute is introducing Mike Kelley with a series of drawings from 1974 to 1976 when Kelley, then a student in Ann Arbor, was just beginning his work. During the course of his most recent project, “Missing Time”, Kelley has come to see new relevance in the response depicted on these sheets of paper to the two poles of his academic training, Abstract Expressionism on the one hand and Pop Art on the other, in which the situation at the academic training is lucidly reflected. Two decades after their creation, the artist examined these works of his past in the light of a new thematic context, investigated the coordinates of their origin, retraced the lines of their inevitable appearance at that time, and partially reactivated his creative involvement with those works, reworking some of them in order to bring out more clearly the expressive mode of those years. — Extract from the introduction written by Carl Haenlein.
