Meio Concreto

Alexandre Estrela (Lisbon, 1971) has persistently interrogated the potential of the moving image and the devices through which it is captured and presented. By exploiting unexpected associations between image, sound and structure, Estrela transforms visual experience into a physical encounter beset by a dazzling suspension of meaning. In the catalogue, Ricardo Matos Cabo explores the link between Estrela’s work and the experimental practices of expanded cinema between 1960─70, Maria João Gamito discusses the raw image, Ricardo Nicolau explores the relationship between the video image and sculpture in the work of Estrela, and Daragh Reeves proposes a personal vision of the artist’s production. Illustrated with installation views specially commissioned from fellow artist André Cepeda, the publication also includes a conversation between Estrela and João Fernandes.
