Karton Tandem 1: Debris

Karton Tandem is a magazine dedicated to accidental encounters, free associations and experimentation in photography and literary writing. Karton Tandem explores the concept of reality in multiple dialogic formulas between a photographer and an author, each issue imagining possible perspectives of looking at and describing the present. Karton Tandem is dedicated to Romanian contemporary photography.

Mihai Șovăială is an artist who lives and works in Zürich and Bucharest. After studying for a BA in the Photo-Video De- partment of the National University of Arts, Bucharest, in 2020 he graduated with a Meisterschüler degree from the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst, Leipzig, in the class of Joachim Brohm. In his works, Mihai Șovăială explores the urban landscape and its fringes, reflecting on the way in which buildings and architecture influence social change and historical narratives. His works have featured in site-spe- cific installations and artist books.

Puiu Lățea has a background in sociology, anthropology and history. He writes about anthropology and photography, col- lectivisation and indebtedness in rural settings, ethnicity and nationalism. He taught contemporary sociological the- ory, language and social interaction, ethnomethodology and conversation analysis, as well as creativity and improvisation in social action. He is currently working on two books, one about Romani musicians, the other about industrial novels and reportage.
