Less Is More Than One Hundred Indian Bicycles (with words from Rirkrit Tiravanija and a Silver Shadow)

»Relational Aesthetics« focuses on visitors’ active involvement in artworks and on their social backgrounds, provided Jonathan Monk with the starting point for his conceptual deliberations. What does it mean when the boundaries between art and everyday life start to dissolve? And what role does politically incorrect behavior play in this context? Sourced in India, bicycles assembled locally form the coordinates, together with a work appropriated Rirkrit Tiravanija, and a Rolls-Royce dating from the 1960s. Whilst this exhibition one bicycle is removed from the installation daily and placed at a different point in Dornbirn, where anybody is free to take it away with them. In this way, the sculpture is taken apart piece by piece, dissolving in the infrastructure of Dornbirn. (Stefan Tasch)

Die »Relational Aesthetics«, die die Beteiligung der Besucher und die soziale Formation in den Mittelpunkt stellt, nimmt Jonathan Monk zum Ausgangspunkt seiner Ausstellung. Was bedeutet es, wenn sich die Grenzen zwischen Kunst und Alltag auflösen? Und welche Rolle spielt politisch nicht korrektes Verhalten? Die aus Indien stammenden Fahrräder, die vor Ort zusammengebaut werden, bilden mit einer appropriierten Arbeit von Rirkrit Tiravanija und einem Rolls Royce aus den 1960er Jahren die Koordinaten. Während der Ausstellung wird jeden Tag ein Fahrrad aus der Installation entfernt und an unterschiedliche Orte in Dornbirn zur freien Entnahme gestellt. Die Skulptur löst sich so Stück für Stück in der Infrastruktur Dornbirns auf. (Stefan Tasch)
