Product Description

In May 1970 Carlo Mollino reached Osaka for the World Expo. It is a long journey with stops in Bangkok, Hong Kong, Tokyo and Kyoto. He has a camera with him and, little by little, seems to become passionate about a civilisation he does not yet know. He is fascinated by the women, the places of tradition (temples, gardens, pagodas), but also by the new architecture, the details of construction, the swarming crowds. Mollino captures a Japan suspended between ancient rituals and the modernity that in a few years will change the face of the country and of which the Expo is an anticipation. The book contains texts by Claudio Giunta, Corrado Levi and Fulvio Ferrari that contextualise the journey and explore the relationship between Mollino and photography. The volume is completed by a series of shots that Mollino took on other trips to the Orient.
