Dieter Roth made radical self-exploration his most important theme. Sometimes ironically, often quite mercilessly, Dieter Roth questioned himself and his actions, his artistic work as well as his daily activities by pictorial means but also in diaries and autobiographical texts. On one hand the publication can be seen as a well-founded contribution to an engagement with the work of Dieter Roth, but with the self portrait, on the other hand, it also puts a theme up for discussion that became problematic for many artists in the second half of the twentieth century.
