On March 23, 1994, at the end of a campaign rally in Lomas Taurinas, a popular slum in the city of Tijuana, Luis Donaldo Colosio, the official candidate for the presidency of Mexico, was assassinated. Since the first moments, suspicions arose related to the real identity of Mario Aburto Martínez, the alleged perpetrator of the murder. The images shown in the mass media at that time caused speculation about the possible replacement of him by another person or series of persons. In this context, all the theories were dismissed by the authorities responsible for investigating, who classified these inconsistencies as a “visual discrepancy” resulting from the use of different cameras, lenses, frames, angles and lighting to photograph the accused.

Despite multiple testimonies that spoke of the participation of a second shooter, in 1995, Mario Aburto was sentenced as the sole author of the murder. Since then he has remained isolated; no image of his face has been published again, and his relatives maintain contact with him exclusively by telephone. To this date, it has not been clarified who fired the second shot against Luis Donaldo Colosio, although the case is formally closed. On February 25, 2021, it was made public that Mario Aburto requested a review of his case by the National Human Rights Commission due to the multiple abuses committed against him from the moment of his arrest that same day of the events.

Al final de un acto campaña en Lomas Taurinas, un barrio popular de la ciudad de Tijuana, fue asesinando Luis Donaldo Colosio, candidato oficial a la presidencia de México. Desde el primer momento surgieron sospechas relacionadas con la identidad real de Mario Aburto Martínez, presunto autor material del asesinato. Las imágenes mostradas en los medios masivos de la época provocaron especulaciones sobre su posible sustitución por otra persona o serie de personas. En ese contexto, todas las teorías fueron desestimadas por las autoridades responsables de investigar los hechos, que clasificaron estas inconsistencias como una “discordancia visual” resultado del uso de diferentes cámaras, ópticas, encuadres, ángulos e iluminación para fotografiar al acusado.

A pesar de multiples testimonios que hablaban de la participación de un segundo disparador, en 1995, Mario Aburto fue sentenciado como único autor del asesinato. Desde entonces ha permanecido aislado; no se ha vuelto a publicar ninguna imagen de su rostro, y sus familiares mantienen contacto con él exclusivamente vía telefónica. Hasta la fecha no se ha esclarecido quién realizó el segundo disparo contra Luis Donaldo Colosio, aunque el caso está formalmente cerrado. El día 25 de febrero de 2021, se hizo público que Mario Aburto solicitó ante la Comisión Nacional de Derechos Humanos la revisión de su caso por los múltiples abusos que se cometieron en su contra desde el momento de su detención el mismo día de los hechos.
