From Here to Tibet. A conversation between two walking artists. March 2019 – July 2020

For more than twenty-five years, artists Hamish Fulton and Michael Höpfner have shared ideas and reflections on art and walking as an autonomous artistic practice. Over the course of time, they have exchanged numerous e-mails, letters and postcards from the places of their excursions, keeping the dialogue open and alive despite their great distances. In 2015, while working together on an exhibition at the MAN Museum in Nuoro, they came up with the idea of collecting in epistolary form the thoughts they exchanged on art, landscape, and the aesthetic and political aspects of walking.
As the title suggests, From Here to Tibet revolves around the profound fascination the two artists have for the territory and culture of the Tibetan people: for both of them, walking and making art in Tibet proved to be a life-changing experience that influenced them in various ways, their way of thinking and artistic production. For the reader, this conversation unfolds like a trace and outlines the walk as an art form, trying to place it within the history of art, dwelling on its social and political implications up to the time of the pandemic.
