Grit

There are certain images that provoke us. Take, for example, the photograph of Jane Birkin, in which she stands leaning casually against a door with a cigarette in one hand and the other in her trousers – a detail that you don’t see at first glance. A groundbreaking image that was seen in the 1970s as an act of female self-emancipation. Grit Hachmeister copied the pose in 2007 and its effect is just as startling as the original. The artist has a series of such pictures in her oeuvre: people dressed in nothing but a pair of shoes engaged in various sexual practices. There’s plenty of fumbling around and coupling here – being human is a messy business. Hachmeister now presents her first monograph, a collection of drawings, self-portraits, visual narratives, and staged photographs that were produced over the last ten years and provide a showcase for the artist’s humorous, gender-critical work.

Grit Hachmeister (*1979 in Leipzig, Germany), lives and works in Berlin. Grant in 2014 from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, New York. Solo exhibition at the ASPN gallery in Leipzig from January to March 2015.


Es gibt Bilder, die provozieren: zum Beispiel das Foto von Jane Birkin, auf dem sie lässig gegen eine Tür gelehnt steht, in der einen Hand eine Zigarette, die andere Hand in der Hose - was man aber erst auf den zweiten Blick sieht. Ein wegweisendes Bild, das in den 1970er Jahren als ein Akt weiblicher Selbstbefreiung galt. Grit Hachmeister hat es 2007 abgezeichnet und der Überraschungseffekt ist unverändert. Die Künstlerin hat eine Reihe solcher Bilder in ihrem Oeuvre: Splitternackte Menschen in Schuhen mit verschiedenen sexuellen Praktiken. Da wird herumgepopelt und gepuhlt – Menschsein ist keine saubere Angelegenheit. Grit Hachmeister legt nun ihre erste Monografie vor, in der Zeichnungen, Selbstporträts, Bildgeschichten und inszenierte Fotografien der letzten zehn Jahre versammelt sind und das humorvolle, geschlechterkritische Werk der Künstlerin vorstellen.
