One of the UK's more promising young labels returns with the kinetic spatial studies of D Hansen's 2nd release, 'A Pair Of Quiet And Empty Rooms'. Avoiding use of samples in favour of unique tones and "something completely other", Hansen recorded bits of junk at discrete distances in a variety of rooms in order to capture their natural reverbs, which were then processed with artificial ones to create whole new semi-fictional dimensions. The results, split over four pieces, make incisive, playful use of silence and tension in a manner recalling Nicola Ratti/Giuseppe Ielasi's Bellows recordings, the non-academic concrète splice-works of Tod Dockstader, and Parmegiani's pinging electro-acoustics, flinging us from chattering alien dialogues to swimming drones sprinkled with chimes and tumbling, gamelan-like chaos with conducted with a super attuned, haptic sensitivity. In other words it's a real gem, by turns esoteric, disciplined and innovative. Recommended!
