Introduction
"Art is the demonstrated wish and will to resolve conflicts through action, be it spiritual, religious, political, personal, social or cultural."
Alastair MacLennan
"In the system of production of cultural and artistic events, as well as in the system of artistic production, there exists a permanent demand for "bigger" productions and for the constant "launching of new ideas". These are the same market laws that also rule the present system of perverted, late capitalism.
In my art practice, I have consciously decided to abandon the production of 'one off' artworks in favour of developing a series of strategic projects that will span a period of several years. This position allows me the possibility of engaging in a much more consistent and deeper analysis and development of the issues with which I deal in my work.
The position of power is continuously reproduced and protected through forms of distance and elitism. But I think, on the other hand, that the need for democracy, social rights and a classless society is of equal importance in the art world, as it is in political life.
The exhibition Strategies of Success / Curators Series 2001-2003, (La BOX, Bourges), (and the present manuscript of the book, I hope will be published in 2004), deals exactly with the attempt to analyse the complexity of issues dealing with class-relations within the art-system, as well as with relations of power-position and sexuality from a radically different point of view.
Having in mind that each of these works, taken in particular, happened at different locations, and that the project in its entirety has so far only been presented at the gallery La Box in Bourges (October - November 2003), I came to the conclusion that the project might not be visible enough, and that it deserved greater attention."
