Ruthless Lantern is a Cantonese publication that centers on Miss Ruthless, a fantasy figure whose mission is to take an active socio-political stance in reuniting and speaking on behalf of the diasporic communities across Hong Kong and China at large. Pageantry is employed as a performative and visual trope that connects far-flung tacets of Chinese youth and beauty culture with the intent to “interpret [pageantry] as a promise of mobility that regulates class and engenders ethnicity”.
