Product Description

Mathilde ter Heijne (*1969 in Strasbourg) explores themes in her work such as the role of women in politically motivated suicide or the media portrayal of female refugees and war victims. In her videos and CD-ROM works, she often uses a life-sized doll of herself as a stand-in actress and records the texts of this alter ego in her own voice.

The artist’s book If It’s Me, It’s Not Me presents Mathilde ter Heijne’s working methods, concepts, and ideas from the past ten years in her distinctive style. A “chronological image archive” featuring a selection of quotes and images from her works is complemented by excerpts from literature and poetry, film, and art history, as well as interviews with experts in fields central to her recent work: the role of women in society, suicide attacks, trauma therapy, and matriarchal research.

Mathilde ter Heijne (*1969 in Strasbourg) lives and works in Berlin and Amsterdam.

She studied at the Stadsakademie in Maastricht (1988–1992) and at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam (1992–1994). In 1998, she came to Berlin with a scholarship at Künstlerhaus Bethanien.
