Freeway Balconies Collier Shorr

Published to accompany the research, later to become an exhibition, curated by American artist Collier Shorr at the Deutsche Guggenheim in 2008, ‘Freeway Balconies’ reads more like an artist’s book than a catalog.

Borrowed from Allen Ginsberg, the title refers to the intersection of spectacle and voyeurism in American culture, expressed here through the idiosyncratic mix of 19 artists, some emerging others established, including Sharon Hayes, Bruce Naumann, Francesca Woodman, Rashawn Griffin, and Richard Prince.

Schorr’s choices, organized around selections from her own work, reveal her interest in identity shifts, cultural memory and forgetting, and the ways in which artistic action and production address these issues.
