Samuel Palmer's vision of landscape has been one of the great discoveries of our time, along with the ecstatic poems of Gerard Manley Hopkins. For seven years, from 1825 to 1832, this young artist lived imaginatively and exclusively in his Valley of Vision, turning Kentish hills and valleys into a universal image of landscape above time or place.
Here is a choice of those Ivrical drawings and pictures (several of them now published for the first time) which were the result, in Palmer's own words, of receiving landscape 'into the soul'. Here as well is a selection from Palmer's extraordinary remarks and writings about visionary art.
