Berlin-Wedding

After the re-edition of Michael Schmidt's legendary photo book "Waffenruhe" (1987), the long-out-of-print artist book "Berlin-Wedding" from 1978 is now published in a second edition. In Berlin-Wedding, Michael Schmidt photographs the district in a documentary style. Although the project was commissioned by the district, Schmidt personally formulated his artistic idea of ​​the city and its residents. Part of the implementation is the conscious design of black and white photographs in a wide range of gray values. This character trait was also implemented in the reissue. Michael Schmidt said:

"It was a very conscious step to drive the images into the immeasurable gray, so that black and white actually no longer appear in them. (...) I thought that the world was not clearly defined, but portrayed in many nuances. "

His recordings all look like they were taken on an early, cloudy Sunday morning in winter. The streets deserted, cleaned of life and like on the dissecting table. The vacant lots, the provisional buildings and the repaired houses all point to the effects of the Second World War and the associated existential shocks to people.
