Our new issue\u00a0with the legendary war photographer James Nachtwey has been a long time in the\u00a0making \u2013 two and a half years in fact \u2013 but as it happens, it could not have\u00a0been released at a more relevant moment,\u00a0with a new wave of terror in form of\u00a0the IS shaking up the Middle East, frontlines between Russia and the West hardening,\u00a0and Ebola wreaking havoc in West Africa. All of which are themes of the kind\u00a0that Nachtwey\u00a0has dedicated his life to for more than 30 years. \u00a0 Inspired by the\u00a0press images from the Vietnam War that told a very different story to the\u00a0official government statements, James Nachtwey found his calling that he would\u00a0pursue with determination and compassion\u00a0that are admirable: to document the\u00a0effects of war, terror and disease. In the hope of raising awareness and inspiring\u00a0intervention and change, his photographs are neither easy to look at nor easy\u00a0to forget. \u00a0 Having\u00a0witnessed and reported on the defining conflicts and tragedies of the past\u00a0three decades \u2013 from the revolutions of South America and Eastern Europe to the\u00a0famines in Africa, from 9\/11 to the wars in Iraq and\u00a0Afghanistan \u2013 Nachtwey\u2019s photographs\u00a0focus on the costs of war: the suffering of civilians, the damage and the\u00a0scars. \u00a0 There is no doubt that Nachtwey\u2019s images are a challenge \u2013 to the powers\u00a0that be by proposing an unflinching look at the reality on the ground, at the\u00a0effects of politics on human lives, but also to us as their\u00a0audience, by\u00a0questioning our implication and, quite simply, by opening our eyes to the\u00a0world. \u00a0 In a rare and\u00a0frank interview with mono.kultur, James Nachtwey talked about his struggles\u00a0with photography, the different realities of war, and why images have the power\u00a0to create change. \u00a0 Graphically, the issue is at its most reduced, giving\u00a0ample space to let the power of words and images unfold: coming in two separate\u00a0booklets, it presents a personal and uncommented selection of James Nachtwey\u2019s\u00a0work in one, and a highly intriguing and challenging conversation in the other.<\/p>\n
