This stencil font, which consists of 43 characters, including numerals and several punctuation marks, was inspired by the lettering on old Danish police cars. A 3D effect is achieved by incorporating drop shadows into the type design. Each character is approximately 6 cm tall, ideal for posters and sign painting, and can be transferred to a surface by using marker, pen, or spray paint.

Stencil typeface, Amsterdam, 2003
Laser-cut steel, 32.5 x 19.3 x 2 cm, 4 plates, ed: 30

Edition Bauhaus 48

Text: Claudia Perren, Werner Möller, Astrid Volpert

Oktober 2015.

The official catalogue of Shinro Ohtake’s exhibition held at Marugame Genichiro-Inokuma Museum of Contemporary Art, Kagawa, 2013.

As the title suggests, “NEWNEW” consisted of only new, recent and never-exhibited works by the artist, deliberately placed throughout the museum to make the most of its unique locational environment and architectural structure.
The exhibited works included installations such as “MON CHERI: A Self-Portrait as a Scrapped Shed,” his contribution to Documenta 13, in addition to large-scale sculptures, collages, oil paintings, oversize drawings and small Gouache paintings on paper.

The catalogue consists of separate sheets, leaflets and a DVD, tied together with a paper faster that is also detachable. Sorted according to their techniques or where they were exhibited, the works are reproduced either in the books or on the sheets. The DVD contains a video documentation of the exhibition from a visitor’s perspective, beginning from a front view of the museum to the deep end of its exhibition rooms.

Larger than A3 in size, each of the eight sheets documents a different large-scale installation by the artist. With the front side covered by a full-bleed photo showing a whole picture of the work, they could be hung on a wall as a poster, while the back side shows details of the work and informs of other related works along with their captions. The three leaflets are formatted in different sizes; two feature image-based works (oil paintings / collages and drawings) and the other contains texts and reference data.

Fantasies of the Library

… is a sequence of pages wherein the reader-as-exhibition-viewer learns, rather surprisingly—but with growing conviction—that the library is not only a curatorial space, but that its bibliological imaginary is also a fertile territory for the exploration of paginated affairs in the Anthropocene.

Fantasies of the Library inaugurates the intercalations: paginated exhibition series. Virtually stacked alongside Anna-Sophie Springer’s feature essay “Melancholies of the Paginated Mind” about unorthodox responses to the institutional ordering principles of book collections, the volume includes an interview with Rick Prelinger and Megan Shaw Prelinger of the Prelinger Library in San Francisco; reflections on the role of cultural memory and the archive by Hammad Nasar, Head of Research and Programmes at the Asia Art Archive, Hong Kong; a conversation with media theorist Joanna Zylinska about experiments on the intersections of curatorial practice and open source e-books; and a discussion between K’s co-director Charles Stankievech and platform developer Adam Hyde on new approaches to open source publishing in science and academia. The photo essay, “Reading Rooms Reading Machines,” presents views of unusual historical libraries next to works by artists such as Kader Attia, Andrew Beccone, Mark DFantasies of the Libraryion, Rodney Graham, Katie Paterson, Veronika Spierenburg, Andrew Norman Wilson, and others.

Surpllus: Talk and book launch @ Motto IMA. 01.11.2014.

IMA and Motto present a talk by Melbourne-based designer and publisher Brad Haylock.

Haylock is program manager of the newly updated Master of Communication Design program at RMIT University, and founding editor of Surpllus, an independent publishing imprint that focuses on critical and speculative practices across art, design, architecture and writing. This talk will consider the politics of publishing and the contested significance of print in the digital age.

Haylock’s talk will be followed by the Brisbane launch of Surpllus #17, Tom Nicholson’s Cartoons for Joseph Selleny, an artist’s book produced as a part of the solo exhibition of the same name at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney, and shown in the exhibition Allegory of the Cave Painting at Extra City Kunsthal, Antwerp, both in 2014.

Catalogue. Amie Siegel. Inventory Press.

Catalogue suggests an artist’s exhibition catalogue, but is rather a chronological compilation of auction catalogues presenting the sales of the mid-century furniture designed by Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret for Chandigarh, India, featured in Amie Siegel’s multi-element film installation Provenance (2013). An aside, an addendum, an index, the publication ends with the Christie’s London catalogue page from the 2013 auction of Provenance itself in the Post-War and Contemporary Art Sale, which completes the economic circuit of the project.

American artist Amie Siegel’s work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York MoMA/PS1, NY; Hayward Gallery, London; Whitney Museum of American Art, NY; Walker Art Center, MN; CCA Wattis, San Francisco; Kunstmuseum Stuttgart; Kunst-Werke, Berlin, Cannes Film Festival and Berlin Film festival among many others. She has been a fellow of the DAAD Berliner-Künstlerprogramm, Guggenheim Foundation, and the recipient of a Sundance Institute Film Fund award.

Desierto #3

28º Celsius is the temperature at which protection becomes superfluous. It is also the temperature at which swimming pools are acclimatized. Within the limits of this hygrothermal comfort zone, we do not require the intervention of our body’s thermoregulatory mechanisms nor that of any external artificial thermal controls in order to feel pleasantly comfortable while carrying out a sedentary activity without clothing. 28º Celsius is thus the temperature at which clothing can disappear, just as architecture could.
