First anthology of Rosemarie Trockel’s collages, which are a key for a difracted and non-academic view on the whole work of this German artist known internationaly.
Rosemarie Trockel’s collages form an important and central component of the retrospective exhibitions “Flagrant Delight”, held in 2012-2013 at Wiels (Brussels), Culturgest (Lisbon) and Museion (Bolzano), and “Verflüssigung der Mutter” (Deliquescence of the Mother), at the Kunsthalle Zurich in 2010. These collages are the subject of this publication, which takes a more detailed and in-depth look at them through a comprehensive body of illustrations of the 100 or so collages Trockel has produced to date, together with commissioned essays that address specifically this (still relatively unexplored) aspect of her extensive and multifaceted work.

Spectral Days by Setareh Shahbazi

“I am glad that things have changed. All efforts toward ridding oneself of the historical past and acquiring new family members have been rewarded. This new sequencing of verb tenses was the material expression of her private epiphanies. Now, photographs were just photographs: pieces of paper that could be pleated, replaced and slipped into a pocket.”

Setareh Shahbazi was born in Tehran in 1978. She moved to Germany in 1985, leaving behind a swimming pool, a garden and all family photographs. After studying Scenography and Media Art at the State University for Art and Design in Karlsruhe, she traveled to Beirut in 2003 with a scholarship from the DAAD to look through other peoples photographic archives at the Arab Image Foundation.
In 2009 Setareh Shahbazi moved to Beirut with a box of photographs from Tehran. There she got into a close conversation with her neighbor Mirene Arsanios, who is a writer based in Beirut.

Scrapbooks 1969-1985, Walter Pfeiffer (Ed.) published by Edition Patrick Frey.

Walter Pfeiffer’s Scrapbooks from 1969 to 1982 are a very unique Wunderkammer. Pfeiffer’s Polaroids and photographs alternate with miscellaneous objects – newspaper clippings, postcards, packaging, tickets – and brief punning notes. Pfeiffer assembles all of this into a large collage full of surprising references and comparisons that is both a visual diary and creative foundation of his artistic work. In his scrap books, Pfeiffer’s keen view of Eros, Zeitgeist and popular culture, his disrespectful humor as well as his appreciation for the poetry in the mundane and banal, are sharply revealed. They offer a view into Pfeiffer’s meandering and playful universe and are a contemporary document that captures the Zeitgeist of the 1970s and 1980s with ephemeral elegance.

The artist’s elegant landscapes and still lifes are re-appropreated – collaged, juxtaposed and presented alongside internet stock photographs to make up a softspoken picture poem in which brute force and a slight caress suggest an undefined plot.

Secret Language The Code Breakers. Stephen Willats. Galerie Thomas Schulte.

Secret Language The Code Breakers, Stephen Willats, published by Galerie Thomas Schulte.

Since the 1960s, Stephen Willats is counted as one of the most influential protagonists of international conceptual art in England. One of the main focuses of his work has always been the examination of urban realities by means of communication processes, network formation, and self-organising structures. Willats illustrates various systems of social interaction through an array of drawings, diagrams, photo-collages, computer-operated communication-devices, and animations. The artist works directly with people: their relationships to each other – be it in a private or professional environment – as well as their relationship to an omnipresent system of everyday symbols; from architectural structures to objects, materials, and sounds that surround us continually. Willats poses the question as to how the personal values and lebensraum of the individual are perceived within society, and how society defines and adopts them.

The Equation of Desire. Martin Soto Climent. Mousse Publishing.

The Equation of Desire. Martin Soto Climent. Mousse Publishing.

The Equation of Desire is the outcome of Martin Soto Climent’s efforts to recognise, name and organise all the relevant and substantial aspects of his own life. Starting from this very personal standpoint, the research soon became an investigation into universal questions of life; it became a series of diagrams about the human condition and also a series of 366 photographs.

All of the photographs emerge from a similar process: Soto Climent rolls-up different pages of vintage photographic yearbooks in such a way that a new and surprising image arises. Being a combination of a number of pictures, the result is reminiscent of a collage, but with one essential distinction: the original pictures are not destroyed by being cut up, they are not even damaged by the act of rolling or other interventions, but just unravel back into their original shape after the shot. The whole process thus results in an ephemeral picture that will disappear again and only remains in the picture taken by the artist.
