Blind Spot

Roland Schimmel's paintings are compositions of black circles on a ground of often clashing colours. The effect is hallucinatory, the spectator being as it were dragged into the painting through the spots. This catalogue of his work opens, after a brief introduction, with a blank page with a black spot in the middle. By now the slightly translucent paper has already provided us with a following page with a spot, two spots, or three, sometimes four. Then come a number of illustrations of paintings on heavy paper and finally, on the flap fold-out, the painting with the title of the catalogue, Blind Spot. The book is complete.

Here, thought the panel, the designer has entered into a dialogue with the artist on a high plane.
