Product Description

In the days of the Netflix boom, where every aspect of modern day life is dealt with in television episodes and every fancy milieu is illuminated in the success format of the series, the serial seems to be omnipresent. Throughout the ages, with rows, repetitions and variations, artists have created extensive sequences, cycles and series.
When the artist duo Huber.Huber was commissioned to work with the collection holdings within the framework of the 150th anniversary of the Graphic Arts Collection ETH Zurich, the artistic research led to an in-depth study of the concept of the serial in art. For the exhibition, on the occasion of which this publication was published, the two artists have not only made a choice that suits them well from one of their series, but also done the same for four other important series from the collections: this is how Dürer's religious symbolism meets with profane motifs by Fischli / Weiss, the light sociability of the sisters Claudia and Julia Müller meets Goya's bleak social holes, together with the refined transformations of the Vanitas by Huber.Huber they form a sort of collage,
The present publication has created a book that approaches the topic of series in an experimental way. His installation, which in a sophisticated rhythm fully depicts the five selected series, requires a "lecture automatique": Subjectively, commonalities of the individual parts, such as developments of the whole, can be perceived, and new criteria, both formal and content, can be pursued. The book should invite you to browse, to discover, to meandering and (also) to skip and flip back.
The illustrated work groups are loosely played around with simulations by Simone Meier, which laconically and with joke of language singles out individual elements from the representations or circumscribes peculiarities of a series. Johannes Binotto has contributed a theory to the series with reference to the term "feedback" and Alexandra Barcal, the co-curator of the exhibition, has in her essay expanded a range of artistic motivations for serial work.
