Product Description

Under the title "The Tenderness of Wolves", Thomas Galler presents an extract of forty drawings from the group of works "Prison Drawings", which were created between 2006 and 2017.
"Prison Drawings" includes a conceptual, graphic work as well as a digital collection of several thousand drawings that the artist has acquired over the past ten years from the Internet. All drawings of this collection have in common that they were produced by prisoners during their captivity or custody. Much of it comes from American prisons and represents drawings from the middle of the last century to the present day. A market for "Murder Memorabilia", also known as "Murderabilia", which has become established with the advent of the Internet and bears letters as well as drawings, hair, testifies to a cult of materials from the hands of perpetrators.
The collection of "Prison Drawings" is used by Thomas Galler as a source from which he determines a selection of templates and image typologies according to various criteria and converts these into his own drawings. The drawing work of the "Prison Drawings" covers to this day against two hundred drawings and sees itself as work in progress.
Appropriation runs like a thread through collections and drawings, and this in a parallelism, which on the one hand refers to Galler's artistic strategy and on the other hand is reflected in the motifs of the originals. Film, comics, fantasy, literature, pornography and even the classical genres of art such as landscape, still life, nude and portrait have an essential influence on the image production in this context and represent contemporary as well as historical exponents from the 1960s and 1970s. Years a discourse with the artifacts of mass culture. Other positions, on the other hand, stand in a kind-breeding context or an outsider-art tradition and develop a crude, poetic pictorial language out of the circumstance of isolation.
With "The Tenderness of Wolves" Thomas Galler poses a series of questions that deal with the originality and existence of an artistic work in and of itself. In the context of the collection and the resulting work, one could also speak of the double or parallel existence of a drawing that materializes again in another context, and thus the reproducibility, the relationship between the original and the copy and the associated value in a conflictual relationship brings.
